A conversation I am having way too often with my female patients TTC or just trying to regain hormonal control - You need to eat more!

Did you know that the HPG axis (the connection between your hypothalamus, pituitary and gonads/reproductive organs) is highly sensitive to changes in energy availability? Basically, when the body senses a reduction in available energy (aka not enough food OR too much energy expenditure/exercise relative to the food coming in), it will actually shift resources away from reproduction towards keeping essential bodily functions working.

A study (Koltun 2020) showed that even a reduction in 10kcals/kg of fat free mass per day (= ~ 450-800 calorie deficit) is enough to shorten your luteal phase and in some cases, prevent menstruation all together.
**
So what does all this mean in every day terms? Ladies. You cannot expect hormonal health on low calorie diets! You need more than 1400 calories per day. In fact, most of my patients require MINIMUM 1800 calories per day with lots of beautiful protein, fat and carbs.
(This requirement often increases depending on your level of physical activity)

If your period is missing or unpredictable, one of the first things we need to do is evaluate how we are fuelling our bodies.
